Explanation about why ShakeAlert didn’t alert is… well, shaky at best. Still, it’ll take time before they iron out all of the issues, especially since it was about 20 years since the last quake of this size. Mrs. Nerd, my wife, was out of town, actually with me, so missed all of the rockin’ and rollin’. Other members of the family were shaken, but not badly.

A damaging earthquake had just shuddered through Ridgecrest, California, about 150 miles away, but LA residents were left wondering why the ShakeAlert LA app, which debuted at the end of 2018, had failed to notify them of the shaking.
