This is a general warning story that we have covered before on the show. I’m sure that we will continue to see an abuse of our DNA evidence, especially as these treasure troves of data are increasing, gathering information on each of us. You paid $100 or perhaps even more, and that data could be used to arrest you, or it could be used to discriminate against you, or it could be used in ways we cannot even imagine. The movie Gattaca is a chilling glimpse at one possible future.

Millions of consumers have bought home-test kits, including 1.5 million from FamilyTreeDNA. How that data is used is largely left up to the companies; “We were talking about horrendous crimes. So I made the decision.”
