Garbage in, garbage out. If someone writes a bad formula, then problems can happen. This one determined health based on how much was spent for medical care. One has to wonder, however, how this formula specifically resulted in being biased against blacks. A new formula reduces that problem, but it also has some continued bias, and that’s disturbing.

A new study shows that a widely used algorithm for predicting which patients get additional care is disproportionately counting out black patients—and could have left tens of thousands without adequate medical care.
