Chicago found a way to make an extra million dollars a month off their residents. Dialing back the threshold for speeding tickets to 6mph over the speed limit for camera tickets instead of the previous 10 mph. That resulted in an increase of about 11 times the previous amount of tickets in one month. If unchecked, this means more aggressive automated police presence may be coming to a city near you.
Chicago’s speed cameras churned out hundreds of thousands of violations in the month after the city dropped the threshold for automated ticketing from 10 miles per hour over the speed limit to just six, data show.
