The gig economy, Uber, Lyft, that jazz bassist named Bart, they all are being affected in a number of different ways. Most of the gig economy today is internet based, and Massachusetts is pushing their own ballot prop that will keep those contractors as independents. Uber’s CEO is digging the approach of IC+ which is that independent contractor but benefits available when you work at least 15 hours a week. Now there’s arguments against the measure too, saying it’s not enough, but I think many have lost sight of trying to find the middle and common ground.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi expressed his support Wednesday for a ballot initiative in Massachusetts that would keep gig economy workers classified as independent contractors, fulfilling a promise he made nearly a year ago to push for laws that preserve its business model. “In the state of Massachusetts, we think the right answer is our IC+ model, which is independent contractor with benefits,” Khosrowshahi said during the earnings call with investors.
