Ships are tracked via GPS. Imagine if they could hack that, and go to places they aren’t supposed to. For instance, instead of going to Iraq, they go Iran (who has sanctions against them). Instead of South Korea, they go to North Korea. This is a current problem with at least 200 large sized ships being detected somewhere far away from their actual location, illegally. Right now, this is just in illegal trading, but this could even lead to even scarier concepts, like common tankers being loaded with missiles in a foreign country, and then coming into our own ports and sending havoc down upon us.
MIAMI (AP) — Technology to hide a ship’s location previously available only to the world’s militaries is spreading fast through the global maritime industry as governments from Iran to Venezuela — and the rogue shipping companies they depend on to move their petroleum products — look for stealthier ways to circumvent U.S.
