As part of the backlash against Russia following the actions against Ukraine, Cogent has pulled the plug on their services into and through Russia. This will deeply impact reliability and throughput for Russians as other services must pickup the slack with no extra monetary incentive. With internet traffic jams developing, that will seriously impact some of the services that the Russian government (and the citizens) rely upon in the Information Age. Unfortunately, that also means that the Russian people won’t have as great of access to find out how Putin’s government is lying to them.

It’s another step toward the “splinternet” that fragments the global communication network.
