One innovative approach is to purchase your computer hardware infrastructure in advance. I did this with a few desktops at a company where I was the IT manager. ServiceNow is a big name in software that handles service tickets for IT, both internal and external users. With 200,000 instances of their database on their servers, it pays to have lots of spare hardware on hand, rather than worrying about it later. With leadtimes ranging from 3 to 6 months or even longer, they decided to purchase a years worth of hardware up front, and also to keep the purchasing rolling. This was a good move for them.

The tech world’s pandemic supply chain meltdown drove ServiceNow to place orders for a year worth of datacenter kit in January 2022, believing that doing so was necessary to get the hardware it needed to cope with growing customer workloads.
