Virtual reality took a hit this year. The idea of VR headsets, whether talking about Oculus (now owned by Meta) or other competitors, has started to show cracks in the system. People have started to experience fatigue, a lack of follow-through on promises, and an overall question as to what sets it aside from other devices. This means that the Facebook/Meta chase down this rabbit hole, is not proving to be the boon they thougth it was. Year over year sales dollars are off by only 2%, and shipments by are down by 12%. For anything considered cutting edge, remarkable, a burgeoning tech… that’s a scary number. I’ve resisted, and I’m glad that I don’t have a $400 paperweight sitting here.
Meta is betting big on virtual reality as an anchor technology for its metaverse, but VR isn’t catching on yet within the mainstream.
