The UK government is making waves now, with an Online Safety Bill. The drama here is that they want to force any messenger apps to scan through all private messages for illegal content. They don’t stop there… internal proprietary efforts would be discarded, and the UK government would select the tools required. This opens up problems for government snooping into all conversations. Further, as we discussed in a similar effort in recent weeks… any backdoor for government usage, is subject to breakage and abuse by bad actors, who would seek other information to exploit.
WhatsApp has threatened to withdraw from the UK over plans to weaken encryption. Privacy campaigners have slammed the plans.
