Think of that cable bill, the tech subscription, that gym membership. We are all stuck in one of those contracts which is nigh impossible to kill. We’ve been there, and it’s bad. The Federal Trade Commission has said that slavery was outlawed over a century back, so the companies need to make it easy to cancel. How easy? Their new “Click to Cancel” says that it must be as simple to cancel as it is to sign-up. Also, for each sign-on method, like Internet or phone, they must offer that same cancellation through that service. Sign-up via Internet, cancel via Internet. Adding on, they can’t use dark patterns. This, of course, will be fought tooth and nail by every one of these companies, industries, and sometimes even ignored.

Canceling a subscription shouldn’t be harder than signing up, FTC proposal says.
