I’m on some public broadcast stations, so this news item has me split. From NPR’s website: Federal funding is essential to public radio’s service to the American public and its continuation is critical for both stations and program producers, including NPR. So I was surprised when this past week, NPR turned off their Twitter accounts after Twitter was labelled “government-funded media”. They’ve also stated that since their integrity was called into question, they will not come back, even if Twitter drops the designation. Personally, I think everyone drops off a platform at their own peril. At a time when NPR is facing a downturn in listeners, to not leverage social media is a poor decision. Yes, there’s more to the battle between Twitter and NPR, but not interesting enough to talk about.
NPR’s official Twitter feeds have gone silent. The news organization cites the social media platform’s decision to question NPR’s editorial independence through a series of inaccurate labels.
