A click-bait headline announces the end of Western Digital making Solid State Drives. Before I continue, Western Digital is one of the biggest manufacturers out there for hard drives. They purchased another leader, SanDisk, in 2016. So, this update is simply that they are going to rebrand a little, and SanDisk will continue to represent flash media, and Western Digital will represent the old-fashioned rotating media. That old-fashioned media is still in heavy usage in many environments due to it’s long-term durability in server farms, and areas where redundancy matters far more than speed.

The flash storage business is being spun off as an independent company.
