Apple really messed things up in their latest patch to iOS 17. Apparently, when one searches for an emoji representing the capital of Israel, Jerusalem, in some English variations (not United States English), it shows a flag. It doesn’t show, however, the flag of Israel, but that of Palestine. This was discovered by a BBC TV presenter, who railed against Apple. Rachel Riley asked the deep question as to “whether this is an intentional act by your company, or whether you have no control over rogue programmers.” Apple’s response thus far is that it wasn’t intentional and they would fix it very soon. Personally, I’d like to know how it happened; a root cause analysis that we’ll never get.

Apple says it will fix an unintentional change in iOS 17.4.1 that now shows the Palestinian flag emoji when a user searches for “Jersualem.”
