Dell offered up a game of chicken to it’s workers of “come to the office, or else”. The choices were actually between being remote or hybrid. Those who picked hybrid need to be in the office almost three days a week, and remote workers were told that they can’t be promoted. Dell couldn’t have expected that about half of their employees would, and did take the option to stay remote, throwing a wrench in Dell’s plans to bring back office culture. Reasons ranged from enjoying more free time to questioning the point of office work when teams are already spread out globally. Some of the remote choosers have also admitted they were planning an exit strategy.

Workers stayed remote even when told they could no longer be promoted.
