On Thursday, Akamai found itself the cause of a major internet outage. They performed a software update, and crashed or slowed websites that represented some of the top names in the world. This outage involved DNS (Domain Name Services), which is the whole system that tracks names to IP addresses. It took about an hour to put it back together, but it was nerve wracking for many people around the country.
Several of the affected services blamed Akamai, a content delivery network.
