Apple has already started a progression over to the USB-C connector, but has stayed with lightning for the iPhone and the entry level iPad series. The EU push is a bit late, and nearly sad. It’s no longer an innovation to push people forward, but merely an afterthought for the one company already heading there. Sadly, all of our lightning connector cables and accessories will all go the same way as the 30-pin connector items from 7 or 8 years back. Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer a common connector for everything, but this is slow going.

The European Union proposed new rules on Thursday that will make USB-C ports standard on smartphones, tablets, cameras, phones, portable speakers and handheld video game systems.
