A strange twist has arisen on the “you don’t own your software” that’s needed for your hardware. Yes, John Deere tractors have long held that only their software can be used on their tractors, and charged extra support prices to increase profits. Some tractors disappeared from a dealer in Ukraine, and now it seems that they have been remotely disabled. I’d rather see companies innovate and bring value than to have them lock us in. Still, a certain sense of the long arm of the nerd disabling stolen equipment is kinda fun.
Millions of dollars worth of John Deere agricultural machinery stolen from a dealership in Ukraine by Russian Federation forces has been traced to the Chechen Republic and bricked, it is reported.
