Two bills have been pushed forward in Congress, and these don’t look good. Instead of precision, the broad brushstrokes being delivered indicate that simple things like using VPNs to access an improper website like TikTok, could be turned into crimes. One wording indicates penalties like banning US financial transactions if one knowingly had information sent to China. Yep, if you knew TikTok could get your info, you lose your bank account… what? Other forms of censorship are likely to be tossed as the two sides of Congress decide that we’re just not important to listen to. This could be unreachable, or it could be drastically intrusive. The act is insanely far-reaching and could have a huge range of deleterious effects, even if it doesn’t criminalize people using a VPN to access TikTok.
