A Black Mirror episode details out a social media scotre for all people. China has announced a similar score. Apparently for 5 years now, our own Department of Homeland Security has been using the University of Alabama to develop a “risk score” for identifying terrorists, using… social media. This new set of techniques ostensibly is to identify bad guys, but then doesn’t really lay out who the bad guys are. Concerns include come when reading argued terms like “disinformation”, or this phrase “scale to other DHS domains”. Yes, this could eventually be used as a political tool, or against people who fall out of favor with whatever party is in power in the government. Unfortunately, because it took 5 years to find this, imagine how long it’ll take to overcome it…

Internal DHS documents reviewed by Motherboard provide more detail on a DHS plan to monitor social media for content related to terrorists, the illegal opioid trade, and foreign interference bots.
