Netflix is starting to wind down their DVD rental business. They’ve also announced that the estimated 1 million+ existing members who are still renting DVDs will get to keep all the discs on hand, and those who sign up will get up to 10 extra discs shipped from the current pending queue. This is quite an interesting way to shutter a business… leaving customers as happy as possible. I’ll miss the DVD service, even though I haven’t had it or used it in years. It represents moving on from the old, and into the next layer… where I lament that we own fewer and fewer things in our lives.
Netflix is shutting down its DVD.com operations soon, and it’ll let subscribers keep any unreturned discs after September 29th.
