An effort is under way to stop ransomware by a group of 48 countries, led by the US. The goal is to stop governments from paying ransomware attackers, which is really an ideal approach anyway. Paying the ransom is not only dangerous, and an unreliable fix, it also sets up funds to various entities that are involved with other issues, like terrorism. This latest approach by this large of a group of countries is important, as it starts to say “we’ve had enough”. Is it going to fully stop things? No, because people are sometimes going to have nowhere else to turn. Best way to beat this? Multiple backups, and a willingness to restart your work from a few weeks ago, rather than lose far more to the bad guys.
The pledge, if signed, will be the strongest signal yet from governments against ransom payments.
