An announcement from China this week, stated that scientists at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology made a groundbreaking invention. They created a new type of optical disc that looks like a DVD or Blu-ray but can hold way more data. This is where it gets a little amazing in the claims. 200TB, or the equivalent of 1500 times the capacity of a Blu-Ray disc. They also state they can make them using standard DVD production techniques within 6 minutes each. The report says it uses a 3D storage system with 100 layers and tiny data spots. If this is as it says, it’ll be an amazing jump. I’ll believe it more when it gets to market, however.
