Hours after we went to air this weeks show, one of the largest IT outages of all time hit. Impacts included the London Stock Exchange, airlines, 911 exchanges, and everything in-between. This outage was attributed to a security software called Crowdstrike, that’s used by corporations around the world, that they had just updated. Some of the problem behind this issue was that this software is loaded onto PCs and servers, as well as onto the backbone of Microsoft services like Azure. The update caused a boot failure upon startup, but to remove this new update, the system must be booted. There are tricks around this, but some recovery will last for a while.
Delta, Americans Airlines and United have resumed flights, although there are likely to be ongoing delays and cancelations due to an outage sparked by a faulty cybersecurity update.
