On July 4th, a massive file containing around 10 billion passwords was leaked online, marking one of the largest password breaches ever. Now it sounds scary, but these passwords were just an accumulation of many data breaches worldwide over recent years. This package still represents some of a threat, even though some data may be old, as it will be used in “credential stuffing” attacks, where hackers reuse compromised passwords to access other accounts. This serves as a reminder of the importance of using unique and strong passwords for each online account to enhance security.
The passwords appeared in one searchable file, increasing the risk of attacks where a user’s password for one account is attempted on other services.
