The 22 year old movie, Minority Report, talks about pre-crime, the idea of predicting crimes and sending people away before having committed serious crimes. Argentina is planning artificial intelligence to do similar. OK, they’re currently not looking to send people away without the actual crime, but they are deploying a variety of features to identify people wanted for crimes, monitor social media, and watch real-time camera footage. All this is to crack down on crime, but what of when those priorities shift, and they are used for more political purposes? What of when that tech falls into the hands of more oppressive regimes? What of the impacts on freedom of speech, when people grow concerned about what they are saying online? It’s not good.
