A Denny’s in Long Beach, California has a new employee, a tiny robot named Lily. There’s a whole article on how it’s great, but really? Despite advancements in restaurant tech, fortunately this remains a novelty, frankly due to human emotions playing a big role. As perceived labor costs are a concern, the economic push for automation will continue. Still, I’d like to think that consumers still prefer human experience over cold machines, even if the tech is ready. The human connection we seek in dining out should take precedence. This robot revolution can’t happen if we just move on to restaurants that realize that the price we pay to eat out, is in part to experience real human providing customer experiences.

On a recent Thursday afternoon at a Denny’s in Long Beach, Calif., a four-foot-tall robot glided toward Diane Deconnick’s table. Its three tiered trays could have hauled a feast, but they were empty except for a bowl of soup and a fried chicken salad.
