California’s Click To Cancel law was signed into place, and it’s a good thing for consumers. Under the law, it requires that California residents can cancel any automatic subscription renewals as easily as they signed up. This applies to California, but the Federal Trade Commission has been looking to make this nationwide. Further, some companies may take the easy approach of just applying this concept to everyone, rather than starting a patchwork quilt of “oh, this customer is in California vs Arizona, so we will give them different screens”. It’s an exciting advance, but I’m sure that there will be complaints, lawsuits, and more.

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed California’s “click to cancel” Assembly Bill 286 into law to make it easier for consumers to opt out of subscriptions.
