A battle is brewing in the WordPress world, after the CEO of company that runs the open source WordPress project, Automattic, lobbed a scathing attack against the practices of a commercial variation called WP Engine. WP Engine returned fire with a cease-and-desist, and the back and forth continued. Other battles ensued over the trademark of WordPress, talks of banning involvement in events, and talks of financial demands. WordPress, as far as the core platform under either name, runs some 40% of the websites around the world, including our own. This could be a series of exchanges that, in the long term, may result in a schism in that install base, and hurt open source, as well as how people post things on the Internet.
Mullenweg, who co-created WordPress, last week criticized WP Engine for raking in profits without giving much back to the open source project.
