Leave aside the bad form of breakup texting in this next story. The darker side of AI summaries, vis-à-vis encapsulating multiple messages into a shorter span, was highlighted this past week. A software developer received a couple of text messages from his girlfriend, and the AI summary read it as “No longer in a relationship; wants belongings from the apartment”. The actual text was more lengthy, but matched up with the overall gist of the content. Regrettably, it seems we continue to move forward with some of the harder parts of implementing technology that can be impersonal, distancing, and potentially out of touch with sensitivity, or rather, the lack thereof.
