Steam is a major player in the gaming market, serving up more games than you could ever play. Most of my usual games are delivered on that platform. A new disclaimer from Steam notes the following “a purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam”. That means that that you don’t actually own the game, and frankly, while it occupies massive space on your hard drive, you probably never did. Plunk down $50, and if Steam decides to pull the game, or decide you don’t follow their agreements, that game is gone. Perhaps your whole library? Who knows… but thus continues the constant march of how we own nothing any more.
The concept of a “digital license” isn’t new, but there’s no pretending you didn’t know about it anymore.
