Microsoft has a new desktop that was announced this week. The $350 Windows 11 PC sounds initially like something of interest to people who think it’ll save money. Instead, however, it’s a venture into the virtual Windows space, that is aimed only at Enterprise level customers. Windows 365 Link, this new desktop, is merely a window to virtual machines on Microsoft servers, for business use. Those virtual machines, however, come at a cost of $31 to $66 a month. Over the course of 3 years, that’s nearly $1500 to up over $2700 for a machine that you don’t even own. Sure, you have the hardware, but without the virtual machine hosted by Microsoft, it’s a useless paperweight.
Dubbed the “Windows 365 Link,” the device is the first of a new class of dedicated ‘boot to cloud’ PCs, which have little local functionality.
