China responded to the current US administration curbs on the sale of advanced technology to them, with their own response. Essentially, if we won’t sell them high-tech items that could have military applications, they won’t sell us some of the rare minerals that we need to make those same high-tech products. We do have some sources of gallium, tungsten, and other materials in the ground here, but we haven’t mined for them in many years. The ripple effects on the price of all high tech items could be of concern as this unfolds. This is a building trade battle that will continue into the next Presidential Administration, which has already telegraphed a more hard-line position.
The move escalates supply chain warfare and comes a day after the Biden administration expanded curbs on the sale of advanced American technology to China.
