The Federal Trade Commission is starting to crack down on makers of smart devices who are abandoning products, including support and patches far earlier than buyers might expect. Some of the products advertised lifetime technical support, but the small print referred to the lifetime of a battery that might last 6 months. The FTC researched 184 smart products and found that 163 of them didn’t disclose the duration of support, or an end date for coverage, which is required for anything over $15. The approach to protect us is under the Magnusson Moss Warranty act, a topic that I’ll cover in a few weeks.
