Just as I mentioned last week, about how a hotel reservation can differ as to where you live, the Federal Trade Commission put out a report that many retailers are doing a wide variety of checks against who you are to pitch you different products, or pricing. This tactic is “Surveillance Pricing”, and it’s working in many different directions against the consumers. The data tracked is specifically setup to impact profits across the board, and is no different than the Netflix, Meta, and other algorithms designed to serve up content and advertising to you. This is part of Big Data, and will continue more, unabated, and hidden, through all of our lives.
According to a new FTC report, retailers are hiring ‘intermediary firms’ to algorithmically tweak and target their prices, so you may be paying more based on your web history and profile.
