Bambu Lab, a 3D printer manufacturer, has announced that if you want to continue to use your 3D printer, that you have to use their own software. They are taking efforts to isolate their printers, under the guise of preventing hackers access to your printer. They already can tell if you are using their filament or not. So, the fear coming, is that they may someday follow HP and lock you down to their paid software, their material, and their own methods, rather than allow you to simply use the hardware, and create to your heart’s content. While Bambu Labs is initially pushing back, saying they have no intention of doing it, it’s clear that we are moving again towards that world where what you own is not really yours.
Bambu decided it would lock down its 3D printers unless you use its proprietary authentication tool, and it’s not exactly backing down.
