This week, Microsoft introduced a quantum chip called Majorana 1. This is only a minor glimpse, however, as they indicate that while it has a lot of the elements to scale up, that it’s really 5 to 10 years off before it’s ready for practical usage. The proof of concept chip presented has only 8 qubits, or quantum bits, which is rather low for typical quantum computing. A slew of hurdles are ahead, from scaling this up, resolving temperature issues, and developing new programming languages to take advantage of the architecture. All of the big names in tech are chasing this idea, and this is just one more step.
