23andMe has been looking for a buyer for a while now, and as expected, filed for bankruptcy as their CEO stepped down this past week. This process will include a selloff of a massive user database that is richer in DNA information than anyone has sold before. There will be buyers for the data, and while there have been struggles for people who sought to remove their own personal data, this has been resolved. There have been constant worries from those in the privacy sector, including me, as buyers of the database will look for many ways to leverage every bit and byte, from identifying cancer markers to linking related people like never before. Cross referenced into other databases, this could become a vast bio-security nightmare, but we need to see who actually buys it. Personally, I’d seek to have my data removed if I were a customer.
