HP settled one of their court cases about non-HP toner and ink this week. It’s not the settlement we wanted as customers. Filed in November 2020, the lawsuit alleged that HP wrongfully compels users to buy and use only HP ink and toner. HP claimed it was anti-hacking updates, which security experts have called baseless. The settlement was laughable… 3 plaintiffs got $5k each, $725k to the lawyers, and we got a disclosure that they’ll continue business as usual. $17.4 billion dollars in printer revenue in 2024, and they are concerned about third-party ink? I fear that next we will hear that Chevy trucks will only work with their in-house branded oil… and Ford’s will only accept Goodyear tires.
HP has previously paid millions for bricking printers, but not this time.
