Imagine being there, playing chess, and your opponent starts cheating. This isn’t an ordinary opponent, but one that has memorized every single rule, and can play a flawless game. The latest is that AI is doing exactly that… cheating at chess. Older versions of AI would need to be encouraged to cheat, but more disturbing is that the more recent ones are taking it upon themselves to do exactly that, by default. This shows an underlying concern with AI that appears to be slightly forgetful, misguided, or doddering, to some kind of odd behavior that’s hard to understand. So, if they play fast and loose with the game of chess, especially as they get better, what will will they do when more important things are happening with AI?
