Self-checkout has been a problem in many spots, and resistance continues everywhere. Sam’s Club is following in the footsteps of the Amazon Fresh or Go stores with a new approach which I’m not fond of. In the Amazon Fresh store, it scanned items as they went in the cart. Now, Sams will have you open their app, scan the items as you put them in, a distinct problem if you shop off of another app, but also if you have low battery, or no smartphone. Then they’ll scan your cart with cameras as you leave. I get the UPC barcoding and all of that, but too many people are going to struggle with this, and tie up the packed store with frustration as they can’t find the right code. Not a great move.
