In the past few weeks, we’ve heard about some proofs of concept that throw shade on Apple’s claim of AI needing massive amounts of CPU and memory. Last week, it was a slimmed down AI program on Windows 98 machine with 128MB of RAM. This week, someone ran ChatGPT, running in the OpenAI programming interface on an iPhone 3GS. Yes, there is some offloading of this latter item to the cloud, but that’s not much different from what Siri, or many of the competitors have done for years. ChatGPT is everywhere, from the web to desktop and mobile devices. However, when it comes to the official app, it only runs on the latest iPhones and iPads as it requires iOS 17 or later. But a 17-year-old developer has now created an alternative ChatGPT app that runs on really old iPhones, such as the iPhone 3GS.
