Florida is following the very bad footsteps of Great Britain. A social media bill in the works there, with the beautiful name of “Social Media Use by Minors”. Problem is that it holds a requirement to decrypt end-to-end encryption in case law enforcement has a subpoena. Forget Freedom of Speech, or the flip side of protecting the kids. This comes down to one of my recurring comments that whenever there is a backdoor for good guys, it’s an entry point for the bad guys. Encryption is vital to all, and secures all of our transactions, and when we start making moves to break that, we allow anyone opportunity to do evil. I hope this doesn’t pass.
At least Florida’s SB 868/HB 743, “Social Media Use By Minors” bill isn’t beating around the bush when it states that it would require “social media platforms to provide a mechanism to decrypt end-to-end encryption when law enforcement obtains a subpoena.” Usually these sorts of sweeping mandates…
