Two separate law proposals during the past week have states chasing after major tech companies. Minnesota is working on a plan to tax social media platforms with more than 100,000 users a flat fee, plus a fee per each user on the platform. $165,000 a month, plus $.50 per person on the platform. This isn’t an approach to reduce problems, but simply to chase after deep pockets to reduce debt. Washington State went in a different direction, that of dating apps, with $1 for each person on Match.com, or other similar apps, that live in the state, to fund domestic violence programs. Both of these may run counter to federal laws that prevent tax in internet access, or excessive taxes on e-commerce. Either way, this is just the start of a bizarre chase for more monies.
