Meta, which owns Facebook, but also Instagram, is starting to make a shift in protecting youth. This week, it was announced that all teenage users will have to have parent permission to livestream their actions. Teen accounts on Instagram were rolled out back in September, but this new announcement includes Facebook and Messenger. This new move includes new verification methods to ensure age, lockdowns against inappropriate content, and unwanted contact from non-followers. I support the idea of corporations taking proactive measures, especially, and hope that the others follow suit, rather than draconian and misguided legislation from non-tech politicians.
The new rules expand on safety changes Meta announced last year to protect young users.
