A bi-partisan bill has been introduced in the Senate called the REPAIR Act, aimed at opening up the diagnostics in our cars. The promise of the OBDII connection was great, but car manufacturers have not been as forthcoming with all of the details for us to fix our cars. This legislation adds in things like ensuring we can get the info we need, but also ensures that Over-the-Air updates don’t render aftermarket parts inoperable, and prohibits mandating the usage of any particular brand or manufacturer of tools, parts, or other equipment. This is a good effort towards supporting the right to repair that we all should naturally have, and we’ll be watching as it moves forward.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) have introduced legislation that would expand car owners’ options for auto repairs.
