One of the things I’ve said for years is that while IT is a great field, college degrees in computing aren’t the best route for most. 4 years ago, nobody was teaching AI skills. 4 years from now, nobody will have to. Various programming languages are gone in those time periods. Worse, college doesn’t teach aspects like adapting quickly, or looking for mistakes in your code. It also doesn’t prep for reality that some people aren’t ready for, like working their way up from the bottom, putting in long hours, or even common sense. The disillusionment of some of the college grads with computer science degrees is harsh, and now the unemployment numbers are showing proof of that.
“Every kid with a laptop thinks they’re the next Zuckerberg, but most can’t debug their way out of a paper bag,” one expert told Newsweek.
