Chess has been long held as a key factor in determining the processing, or rather thinking power, of computer systems. Some of the latest news has been ChatGPT beating some of the best. Now picture that same ChatGPT going up against tech from 1979… the Atari 1979 Video Chess game. A tech decided to pit the two against each other in a match, and ChatGPT couldn’t hold it’s own against the ages old system that many played at home in the early 80’s. There is a caveat in that ChatGPT is a large language model, designed to communicate with us in plain English, and not compete in the chess world. It’s still telling how this ages old test of skill, strategy, and thinking, could suffer so badly against a system that’s been around since before Ronald Reagan was President.
