For a while now, the usage of the em dash has been talked about as a way to identify AI. Oddly enough, there are defenders of this in their standard writing, saying that the most literate amongst us will use it frequently. I’m going to push back, as the ability to create an em dash readily, is a little harder than the standard called en dash. To do the em dash in Windows, you have to use ctrl-alt-minus sign, or on the Mac it’s Option-minus sign. In all of the writing that I’ve seen over the years, it’s been rare in journalism, and non-existent in business, so perhaps it’s an indicator… like odd word choices, or prose that’s far above the level of the authors capabilities.
Some say the em dash is a sign of AI writing. But experts push back, arguing it’s more about writing skill than punctuation.
