NFC (or Near Field Communications) has a new standard that is coming this fall. Along with this is a new range that is 4 times larger than before. Let’s be clear, the scares of yesteryear, where people said that these chips could have their data swiped by people casually nearby were not true. The distance we are talking about is up from 5mm, now to 2cm, or basically, just under an inch overall. This will allow for easier usage when you’re using NFC for anything from contactless payments, to exchanging small amounts of information. I’m happy to see this increased range, as I’ve tinkered with NFC stickers and cards in the past, and the precision before was a stumbling block.
NFC technology is getting an upgrade with NFC Release 15, bringing extended range and new features for improved contactless payments.
